What a design protects
The appearance of a product — its shape, lines, colours or pattern — as long as it is new. It does not protect how the product works (that is a patent) or the brand on it (that is a trademark).
Process
- Apply online with drawings or photographs of the design (Arabic and English).
- Pay the filing fee: AED 1,000 (individuals) or AED 2,000 (companies).
- Formal examination — about 7 months — then substantive examination and the examiner’s decision.
- Pay the publication fee; the design is registered and published and the certificate follows about 3 months later.
Missing documents must be supplied within 90 days. Applicants outside the UAE need a power of attorney.
How long protection lasts
Up to 20 years from the filing date, kept in force by annual fees.
