1. Decide what you are protecting

Choose the exact mark: a word (brand name), a logo, or both together. Then list the goods and services you sell and find their Nice classes. A clear list now saves objections later.

2. Search the register

Check for identical and similar marks in the same and related classes. The Ministry offers an official trademark inquiry for AED 350; firms also run broader clearance searches. See UAE trademark search.

3. Prepare the documents

You need a JPEG image of the mark, a trade licence copy for companies, and a notarised power of attorney if an agent files for you (for owners outside the UAE, notarised, legalised and translated). Owners outside the UAE must file through a registered agent. See documents required.

4. File and pay the examination fee

The application is filed online with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism. The examination fee is AED 750 per class, or AED 2,250 for a decision within one working day.

5. Examination

The Ministry checks that the mark is registrable and not confusingly similar to an earlier one. It can accept, accept with conditions, or refuse. If it asks for changes or sets conditions, you have 30 days to respond — otherwise the application is treated as abandoned. A refusal, or a conditional acceptance you disagree with, can be challenged before the grievance committee within 30 days.

6. Publication and opposition

Once accepted, pay the AED 750 publication fee. The mark appears in the official Trademark Bulletin, issued twice a month. Anyone with an interest can oppose within 30 days of publication. See oppositions.

7. Registration and certificate

If there is no opposition, or you win it, pay the AED 5,000 registration fee. The certificate is issued within 30 days after the opposition period. Protection runs for 10 years from the filing date.
