Quick answer
UAE trademarks are governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 36 of 2021 on Trademarks and its Executive Regulations. It protects registered marks for 10 years at a time, covers non-traditional marks such as sounds and 3D shapes, allows multi-class applications and raises the penalties for infringement.

What the law protects
Any distinctive sign — words, names, logos, letters, numbers, shapes, colours, sounds and more — used to tell goods or services apart. It also covers collective marks and geographical indications. See types of trademarks.
Registration and term
- One federal register kept by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism.
- Applications can cover several classes.
- Accepted marks are published, and anyone with an interest can oppose within 30 days (opposition).
- Protection lasts 10 years and can be renewed (renewal).
Use it or lose it
A registered mark can be challenged and cancelled, fully or in part, if it is not genuinely used for five consecutive years. Keep dated evidence of use.
Enforcement
The law sets civil remedies and criminal penalties — fines and imprisonment — for counterfeiting and for knowingly selling or importing goods with an infringing mark. See infringement.
