UAE vs Qatar trademark registration

Selling in the UAE and Qatar? Here is how the two registrations compare — and the simplest way to protect your brand in both.

Quick answer

A UAE trademark does not protect you in Qatar, and the other way round — you need both. The UAE charges AED 6,500 per class and allows several classes in one application with a 30-day opposition period; Qatar has QAR fees per the official schedule, one class per application, and an opposition period of 60 days from publication. Both are in the Madrid System.

Why you need both

Trademarks are territorial: a UAE registration gives no rights in Qatar, and the other way round. Both are first-to-file, so someone who files your name first in Qatar can block you there even if you own it in the UAE. Register in every market where you sell or manufacture.

How to cover both

  • Through Madrid: both the UAE and Qatar are in the Madrid System. A UAE owner can extend a UAE application or registration to Qatar in one international application; an owner elsewhere can designate both. Each office still examines the mark under its own rules.
  • Nationally in each: file directly with each office — often better when you need local wording of goods, expect objections, or want a national certificate quickly.
  • Start where you sell first: file there, then claim priority in the other within 6 months (Paris Convention) so the earlier date protects you.

Good to know about Qatar

  • Qatar joined the Madrid Protocol with effect from 3 August 2024, so it can be designated in international applications.
  • Since July/August 2023 Qatar applies the GCC Trademark Law and its Implementing Regulations (Ministerial Decision No. 56 of 2023), which shortened most deadlines, including the opposition period from 4 months to 60 days.
  • Official fees are charged per mark per class, and each class is filed as a separate application.
  • A Qatari registration covers Qatar only; the GCC law is a common text, not a regional registration system.
  • Qatar has special laws protecting FIFA trademarks and related rights (Law No. 11 of 2021).

Questions

Does a UAE trademark cover Qatar?
No. You need a separate registration in Qatar — filed nationally or through the Madrid System.
Which is cheaper, the UAE or Qatar?
Compare the official fees in the table: the UAE charges AED 6,500 per class in official fees. In both countries the agent’s fee comes on top.
Can I use the Madrid System for Qatar?
Yes — Qatar is a Madrid member (since 3 August 2024), and so is the UAE.
