The UAE trademark registration certificate

When you receive it

After the mark is accepted and published, the 30-day opposition period runs. If nobody opposes, you pay the registration fee (AED 5,000 per class) and the Ministry issues the certificate within 30 days. Late payment of the registration fee attracts penalties (see fees).

What it shows

Under Article 17 of the Trademark Law the certificate records:

• the registration number and any priority claimed;
• the filing, registration and expiry dates;
• the owner’s name, address and nationality;
• a copy of the mark;
• the goods or services and their class.

Validity and renewal

Registration takes effect from the filing date and lasts 10 years. It can be renewed for further 10-year periods without new examination (renewal); if it is not renewed in time it is treated as cancelled.

Using the certificate

• Record it with customs to stop counterfeit imports.
• Enrol in marketplace brand programmes.
• Support licences, franchising and transfers.
• Prove ownership in infringement actions.
