UAE vs Egypt trademark registration

Selling in the UAE and Egypt? Here is how the two registrations compare — and the simplest way to protect your brand in both.

Quick answer

A UAE trademark does not protect you in Egypt, and the other way round — you need both. The UAE charges AED 6,500 per class and allows several classes in one application with a 30-day opposition period; Egypt has its own fee schedule, check with the office, and an opposition period of 60 days from publication. Both are in the Madrid System.

Why you need both

Trademarks are territorial: a UAE registration gives no rights in Egypt, and the other way round. Filing early matters: an earlier application in Egypt can block you there even if you own the mark in the UAE. Register in every market where you sell or manufacture.

How to cover both

  • Through Madrid: both the UAE and Egypt are in the Madrid System. A UAE owner can extend a UAE application or registration to Egypt in one international application; an owner elsewhere can designate both. Each office still examines the mark under its own rules.
  • Nationally in each: file directly with each office — often better when you need local wording of goods, expect objections, or want a national certificate quickly.
  • Start where you sell first: file there, then claim priority in the other within 6 months (Paris Convention) so the earlier date protects you.

Good to know about Egypt

  • The Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority (EGIPA), created by Law No. 163 of 2023, is taking over the trademarks office; filings were reported in 2025 to continue at the Trademarks Office in Nasr City for now.
  • EGIPA raised official fees for trademark searches, filings and renewals from 5 March 2026 (Decisions Nos. 64 and 65 of 2026).
  • Late filing of the power of attorney, incorporation documents and priority documents is allowed within six months of filing, with an Arabic translation required for the priority document.
  • Registration can be cancelled at the request of an interested party if the mark has not been used for five consecutive years.

Questions

Does a UAE trademark cover Egypt?
No. You need a separate registration in Egypt — filed nationally or through the Madrid System.
Which is cheaper, the UAE or Egypt?
Compare the official fees in the table: the UAE charges AED 6,500 per class in official fees. In both countries the agent’s fee comes on top.
Can I use the Madrid System for Egypt?
Yes — Egypt is a Madrid member (since 3 September 2009), and so is the UAE.
