How to register a trademark in Cyprus
- Search earlier marks, for example in TMview or the Office's online register.
- File the application with the Intellectual Property Section, naming the representative or special attorney and listing goods and services by Nice class.
- The Office checks filing-date and formal requirements; deficiencies must generally be corrected within 2 months.
- The Office examines absolute grounds for refusal; the applicant has 2 months to respond to an objection, for example by limiting the goods or services.
- The accepted application is published, including on the Office's website.
- Third parties may oppose within 3 months of publication.
- If no opposition succeeds, the mark is registered for 10 years from the filing date.
Examination, publication and opposition
- Examination: The Intellectual Property Section examines formal requirements and absolute grounds for refusal; applicants have 2 months to respond to objections. No official processing time was found.
- Publication: Applications are published on the Office's website under the Trademark Regulations 2020; some announcements still appear in publications of the Government Printing Office.
- Opposition period: 3 months from publication of the application
Protection, renewal and use
- Term: 10 years from the filing date, renewable.
- Use requirement: a registration can be challenged after 5 years of non-use.
Filing from abroad
- Local agent: The Trademark Regulations 2020 require the application to state the name, professional address and contact details of the representative or special attorney, with a declaration that they legally represent the applicant. A 2025 law-firm article states that a Cypriot lawyer must act as representative before the Office.
- Power of attorney: The 2020 amendment removed the requirement to file a power of attorney form in trademark procedures; the Regulations instead require a declaration by the representative that they legally represent the applicant.

- Non-traditional marks such as shape, colour and sound marks can be registered since the 2020 amendment.
