How to register a trademark in Bulgaria

  1. Search the BPO registers for earlier identical or similar marks.
  2. File the application in Bulgarian on the BPO form (by post, fax or the e-services portal), writing out the full list of goods and services.
  3. Pay the filing and examination fee within 14 days of the Office's notice (late payment within a further 14 days costs double).
  4. BPO carries out a formal examination and an examination on absolute grounds for refusal.
  5. The application is published in the Official Bulletin of the Patent Office, opening a three-month opposition period.
  6. If no opposition is filed or it is rejected, BPO issues a registration decision; the mark is entered in the State Register and the certificate is issued after payment of the certificate fee.
  7. Renew the registration every 10 years from the filing date.

Examination, publication and opposition

  • Opposition period: 3 months from publication of the application

Protection, renewal and use

  • Term: 10 years from the filing date, renewable.

  • Use requirement: a registration can be challenged after 5 years of non-use.
  • Rights system: first to file.

Filing from abroad

  • Local agent: Persons not established in Bulgaria, another EU member state, an EEA state or Switzerland must act before the Patent Office through a Bulgarian lawyer or a registered industrial property representative.
  • Power of attorney: A written authorisation of the representative is required; further formalities (notarisation, deadlines) were not verified.
  • Language: Bulgarian; documents in other languages must be accompanied by a Bulgarian translation

Madrid Protocol

Bulgaria is a member of the Madrid System (in force since 2001). You can designate it in an international application filed through your home office, or file a national application directly. A local firm can advise which route is cheaper for your classes and timeline.

Trademark classes

Nice Classification (45 classes); the full list of goods and services must be written out, as class numbers alone are not sufficient. One application can cover several classes. Not sure which classes you need? See all 45 classes or classes by business type.

How Bulgaria compares

Good to know in Bulgaria

  • Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026; the BPO tariff in force from that date states fees in euro.
  • The basic filing and renewal fees cover up to three classes, with a fee for each additional class.
  • A separate application may be needed to protect both the Cyrillic and Latin versions of a word mark, as each application covers one sign used as filed.
  • The application cannot be amended after filing except to correct the applicant's name or address or obvious errors that do not change the sign or broaden the goods and services.
  • Bulgaria is an EU member state, so EU trade marks registered at EUIPO also cover Bulgaria.
