## Steps
1. Search the Swedish trademark database, EUIPO and WIPO records for earlier marks covering Sweden.
2. Decide on the goods and services and the Nice classes to be covered, since the fee depends on the number of classes.
3. File the application with PRV, preferably through the e-service, and pay the application fee.
4. PRV checks the filing-date requirements and the application then becomes visible in the Swedish trademark database.
5. PRV examines the application and, if it finds obstacles, issues an order letter that the applicant can answer within a set period.
6. If no obstacles remain, PRV registers the mark and announces it in the Swedish Trademark Gazette.
7. Third parties may oppose within three months of the announcement; otherwise the registration stands.

- **Examination:** PRV examines the application against its guidelines and issues an order letter if it finds obstacles; PRV states it currently takes about 6 weeks to receive feedback on a new application.
- **Publication:** Swedish Trademark Gazette (Svensk varumärkestidning), after registration
- **Opposition:** 3 months from the date of announcement of the registration (post-registration opposition)
- **Late renewal:** Renewal may be requested up to 6 months before and up to 6 months after expiry; a late renewal surcharge of SEK 200 per class applies after expiry
- **Use requirement:** a registration can be challenged after 5 years of non-use.

## Good to know
- Opposition in Sweden takes place after registration: the mark is registered first and the three-month opposition window opens on announcement.
- Application fees are payable whether or not the application succeeds, because they cover handling costs.
- Filing through PRV's e-service is cheaper than filing on paper (SEK 2,700 versus SEK 3,900 for the first class).
- A Swedish registration is valid for ten years counted from the filing date, not the registration date.
- Sweden is an EU member state, so an EU trade mark from EUIPO also covers Sweden; PRV can convert an EU trademark into a Swedish application.
