# Trademark registration in Hong Kong

> Trademarks in Hong Kong are registered with the Trade Marks Registry, Intellectual Property Department (IPD); the official application fee is HKD 2,000 for one class, and third parties can oppose within 3 months beginning on the date of publication. A registration lasts 10 years from the filing date and can be renewed. Hong Kong is not in the Madrid System, so a national filing is needed.

## Good to know
- Hong Kong has a separate trade mark system from Mainland China; a Chinese (CNIPA) registration does not cover Hong Kong and vice versa.
- The Madrid Protocol does not yet apply to Hong Kong: the Trade Marks (Amendment) Ordinance 2020 provides the legal basis, but no commencement date had been announced as of early 2026.
- Defensive trade mark registrations are available for well-known marks at a separate fee.
- A series of marks can be filed in one application for the same fee as a single mark.
- Payment by credit card is only available through the IPD e-filing system.
