## Steps
1. Search the PRH Trademark Information Service and EU/international registers for earlier similar marks.
2. File the application through the PRH online service (Suomi.fi identification required) with the list of goods and services in Finnish or Swedish, and pay the fee by card or online bank transfer.
3. PRH carries out a formal examination of the application data, classes, fee and representation of the mark.
4. PRH carries out a substantive examination, checking distinctiveness and other obstacles and searching for similar national, EU and international marks covering Finland.
5. If obstacles are found, PRH issues an office action and the applicant must respond, or the application is dismissed.
6. If there are no obstacles, the mark is registered and published in the Finnish Trademark Gazette, and a registration certificate is sent.
7. Third parties may file an opposition within 2 months of the publication of the registration.

- **Examination:** PRH examines formalities and substance (distinctiveness, other obstacles and a search of earlier similar national, EU and international marks covering Finland). - **Timeline:** PRH estimates about 48 working days from receipt to registration (or to the first office action) for national applications, as of week 41 of 2026; PRH notes this is an estimate and may change.
- **Late renewal:** 6 months after expiry, with a higher late renewal fee (EUR 320 online instead of EUR 250)
- **Power of attorney:** A power of attorney generally does not need to be submitted; PRH may request one in exceptional cases, to be filed within 2 months of the request.
- **Language:** Finnish or Swedish (the list of goods and services may be in Finnish or Swedish)
- **Use requirement:** a registration can be challenged after 5 years of non-use.

## Good to know
- Finland uses post-registration opposition: the mark is registered first and oppositions are filed within 2 months after the registration is published.
- Exclusive rights in Finland can arise through registration and also through use (establishment of the mark), so unregistered marks may also have protection.
- For applications pending on or after 1 May 2019, the 10-year term runs from the filing date; for earlier applications it runs from the registration date.
- The application fee includes one class; each additional class costs EUR 100, and paper filing costs EUR 50 more than online filing.
- Finland is also covered by EU trade marks filed at EUIPO and by international registrations designating Finland or the EU.
